BAMADOG'S TAKE ON THE GAME
- 1997 SEASON -

AWBUN - Bama gives it away ...17-18, (4-7), (2-6)

Well, Iron Bowl time is over and Awbun fins themselves goin' to the SEC Championship for the first time. And I'll tell ya this...this was probably the best game the Tide played all year long, and to come away with nothing...man, I just feel sorry for the players. I think the biggest thing about this game was the passing play on 3rd down where Scissum fumbled the ball...Guess I'll get to that in a minute...

OFFENSIVLY, Bama played a HECKUVA game, except for the series where Lance was in the game. I admit that lately, Lance has been the spark at times, and even played decently against Miss.St...but when it comes to Awbun time, Freddie is the man....and for all of you Freddie bashers, may he rest in peace. He got the job done to the best of his ability (IRON BOWL) and should have come away with a victory. There were dropped passes, and a fumble, and a missed FG that didn't help him at all. And when you add in 3 drives by Tucker with no effectiveness, and throw him in and he gives you 17 points when the offense finally does click...you can see what an asset he was for this particular game. Granted, in the past, he's had some good games and some bad, but like I said, when it comes to Awbun, Freddie produces, and that can't be denied. Freddie should be 3-0 easily against them. His first time, Curtis was in, but was called out...Freddie 0-1. Last year, he made the drive of the season to pull out the win to send Bama to the SEC Championship...Freddie 1-1. This year, he came in off the bench with only about 10% of the reps that week in practice, and jet propelled Bama to a 17-6 lead, only to have poor play calling in the end to give the game away...Freddie 1-2. You can't deny he produces come IRON BOWL time. Just ain't fair for him to lose.

As for the rest of the offense, we made some key grabs, but still dropped WAY TOO MANY passes. If the ball hits you in the numbers, you should catch it...nuff said. And fumbles didn't help either. Hall made the great catch near the end zone, but then fumbled it...we've just got to learn to hang on to the ball a little better....but he felt better later in the game when he caught a TD pass to put the Tide up 7-6. Then there was the play where Buchanon and Hall about ran into each other...what's up with that? Man, at the end of the season, these guys should know the offense forwards and backwards...I don't know whether to blame the players or coaches....but that's something that should never happened. Shoulda been a catch on the 1 yd line...but we'll never know. RB's played well too. Riddle played hard (as usual in the IRON Bowl)...Curtis had a decent game...and then well...Shaun coming in in the 4th quarter with a fresh pair of legs I think caught the Tigers off guard because they had a VERY tough time stopping him...and even so - he scored a touchdown to put Bama up 17-6. He is the man, and won't go down unless he's got 4 guys on him. If he stays healthy next year, Bama's running game is going to be great...but we have to keep him in the I-formation...he gets a blocker in front of him, and he's off to the races. The offensive line did an outstanding job creating holes, and protecting the QB most of the game. Freddie got good looks and it showed. Of course a couple of times we threw the ball right at the defender's outstretched hands...but that's part of the game. Good job, OL. WR's played an average game...caught some, and missed some. But I would have to say that they played better than normal as of late. They seemed to be open a lot more and ran better routes. I was SOO happy to see those little 2 steps, then cut across the middle by Goss and Jackson...they helped us in getting good yardage all day. It's the same exact thing that Florida does, and it seems to work a heckuva lot of the time. More of that next year....we just need to be consistent in catching the ball.

DEFENSIVELY, I think Bama played one of their best games of the year, if not THE best. FINALLY, the guys tackled like Bama D's of old...guys should really model themselves like Travis Carroll because that guys just KNOWS how to tackle and play football. He seems to be involved in every play I saw. And he doesn't just hit guys with his shoulder...that guy hits them hard, stands them up, and knocks them backwards...TACKLES, TACKLES, TACKLES. Thank you, Travis for setting the good example! And this guy is only a Freshman...Let's hope he doesn't leave early come his Junior year. We need that kind of leadership....The DL played an exceptional game. They got some sacks and kept penetrating the Awbun OL the whole game. I was SO surprised to see how much we dominated their line...we kept Damian Craig on his heels most of the game...and when they handed the ball off, we stuffed them almost every play. I was just SO impressed...it was like the Bama of old was back. Makes you wonder where that D was all year, huh? :) The DB's also played great games, but were lucky at times. Awbun had dropped passes as well that could have easily hurt Bama...Missing the 2-pt. conversion helped us out too...thank goodness for butterfingers, huh? But considering the injuries, the DB's and safeties, played a great game tackling and covering their man. Looked like we played a little more man-on-man as well...I think that helped out a bit. Kudos to the defense, you couldn't have asked for better play out of this battered bunch. They played hard enough to win the game for dang sure. Great game guys!

SPECIAL TEAMS was majorly improved. We did miss a FG, but I guess that's still expected considering, huh? But we hit another FG, and made the XP's with no problem...then miss the MONSTER kick at the end of the game (and what a great try Diaz gave us). Punt coverage was AWESOME, and so was the kick coverage. We finally played like a team that knew how to play and tackle the other team. No major yards were given up to my knowledge....and if they were, the D stepped up and made the stops. Pope - He'll be back next year to claim my MVP award again. :) He was the man all year long. He was the only consistent thing on special teams that even helped us remotely stay in the game. Great job on the year, Pope. You get my 1997 Bamadog MVP Award. :) Come to Dallas to claim your prize. I was also impressed with the new FG kicker this game. I think he was a walk-on, yet got the ball up, and made some plays. And to come in for the first time in your career, and in the Iron Bowl to make your first FG/XP attempts, that says a lot...also, on Awbun soil. EEEW! For the last play of the game, my hat is off to Diaz for making a GREAT kick...just wasn't long enough. I tell ya...the ESPN guys had me jumpin' early cuz as soon as he kicked it, they said "It's got the distance", and at the same time, they showed an end zone shot, and it was right down the middle...I just knew he was going to make "The Kick III" (with his FG prolly being the biggest EVER in Crimson Tide's long history of football). It was really a shame when I saw it hit about 5 yards in front of the field goal post. That was one of the biggest heart-breaking losses I've been a part of. I really felt sorry for the team, because of how well they had played. They deserved better. Let's just hope that the FG kicking team REALLY gets their act together next year. They gave us too many problems this year.

COACHING was the name of the game for the Iron Bowl. They had the Bama players READY to play, and it showed. The defense played VERY well, and once Freddie got in the game, he started working his Irong Bowl magic. Nothing against Lance, but Freddie is the man, come Awbun time. Anyway, the players responded well, and executed the whole game, despite 2 fumbles on offense. Those things happen, but we still need to take lots better care of the football. In our case, it didn't help us any. The play calling on offense kept the Awbun defense confused all day. I think we had players moving on almost every play of the game...Goss in motion, Rutledge move to the other side, Shaun/Riddle/Curtis out of the backfield into the slot...split backs now to the I...Lance back in the shotgun - it just never ended, and they played like they knew HOW to play football, and was pretty disciplined at the line. The players generally played with a passion. And what was up with those 2 catches by Rutledge being denied??? I had the instant replay, and having NO bias, he CAUGHT those balls! We need to get some NFL refs...they are usually on the ball 95% of the time. Rarely do you see bad calls in the NFL as of late. Anyway, the coaches had the players READY...offense, defense, special teams (and got a good kicker ready)... But then, when the game is on the line, and it's 3rd down, and all you have to do is run the ball, get the 1st down or not, then punt (if not)...and you choose to pass the ball and be greedy? That just shows the lack of coaching inexperience. I have never coached a game in my life, but there is NO way I throw the ball with less than 2 minutes left, and it being 3rd down on my side of the field...you take what you can get, don't be greedy, and punt if necessary. I don't blame Scissum at all...he has helped out the Tide SOOOOO many games, and for this one game to be put on his shoulders isn't fair. I really felt sorry for him as I saw him on the sidelines after the fumble (then after Holmes made the winning FG). It was a shame for a play to happen to him that way...he was one of the seniors that has been so consistent all year, then a fumble that cost us the game...but like I said, you just don't call that play...it's just not safe! I'll be Gene Stallings was up all night trying to figure out what either DuBose or Arians was trying to do. With less than 2 minutes to play and no timeouts, we coulda pinned them deep in their own territory against a Bama D that was electrified the whole game. I don't see them winning if we punt...it just wasn't fair to the players. Coaching, only for that one play, cost us the game. And I hate to say that because there are other plays in the game as well that could help/cost us as well, but for a play call such as that...the coach who made that call should be shot.

THEN -- we got the kickoff, and who else to get the ball but the man who had the fumble...big Ed Scissum. And HE WOULD NOT BE DENIED!! He just would not go down...I was thinking when he got it...wouldn't it be SOOO great for him to take it back all the way to clear that one mistake he had just made? Well, he gave us all he had pulling players left and right, spinning, and churning thru the Awbun special teams till they finally drug him down at the 45 yard line, only being drug down by a 15 yard personal foul face-mask penalty, which gave Bama the chance to win from 57 yards. Five more yards, and I think Bama pulls it out...10 yards, for sure. Hats off to Ed Scissum though. He has given us all a FB could give Bama. He is the man, and regardless of what happened, he is one of the best FB's we've ever had. And like Mike Gottfried said - "I'll play with Ed Scissum any day". That holds true with me too.

I guess that about covers the 1997 Iron Bowl. 17-18 Awbun Plainsmen Tiger War Eagle idiots have won yet again at J-H Stadium. And believe you me, they KNOW they were lucky in that win. Terry Bowden was really questioning his call to punt the ball once we got it back, cuz even if we punt, Awbun has a lot to make up...but that's something we'll never know. One last thing to mention was the penalties. You just don't have an easy time winning when you have 11 penalies for 111 yards hit your way. about 1/3 of those yards came on the first drive by Awbun though...hats off to the D though. They played a heckuva game, seriously. Bama truly deserved to win. It's time to re-evaluate our coaching staff. It's time for someone to go, and I ain't just whistlin' Dixie.

Well, until next season, y'all take care...hope you have enjoyed my take on the game every week. I've enjoyed it (except for freakin' losing all the time). It takes up a lot of my time when I write these things, but I think my view gives you a different perspective rather than reading a published column. Here, I can write what I want...hope you have enjoyed it!

Basketball/Gymnastics/Baseball is next, and so far, the men's basketball team is 2-0. They just pulled the upset of Minnesota AT Minnesota 64-63 on Iron Bowl day. I saw them play in the first exhibition game, and I must say they look a little more together than last year. Having a true point guard is really gonna help this team this year. Thank you, Chauncy Jones. :) Here's to a great basketball season for both the men & women. Cheer...

And ROOOOOOLLLL TIDE!!!!!!!

Your host...The Bamadog

MISS.ST. - Bama gets shallacked...20-32, (4-6), (2-5)

70-15-1...does that ring any bells?? That was Gene Stallings' record in his 7 years at the Capstone. Everyone criticized him for having a boring offense and low scoring games (which we won)...but now look at us. I think we shoulda counted our blessings when he WAS here, cuz the Bama of '97 just ain't what it used to be. By the end of next weekend, (and I look at this REALISTICALLY) Bama will have lost almost 1/2 as many games in this one season as Stallings did his whole stay here at Bama. Definitely not the way you wanna start off. granted, GS started out 7-4, then went to the Fiesta Bowl and lost making his first season 7-5. That would make Stallings 2 losses worse than DuBose in his first season...but THEN Stallings got the team on track. We lost the 2nd game of the very next season to Florida 0-35 (the last time we were shut out before LSU this year), and then went on a 28-game winning streak with a national championship (that winning streak stopped when LSU came into Bryant-Denny and upset the Tide in '93). My point - things look really bad now, but just remember...things can definitely get better. I don't see how they could get much worse. More later on this...

The Miss.St. game was nothing but a pile of doo doo for the Crimson Tide. We looked like doo doo and played like doo doo, but at least we scored this week. There were some bright spots though, but not many.

The OFFENSE was good to start out the game, but after it was 14-14, our offense again looked quite offensive. If we played a high school team, we might still get beat. That's how bad our offense is playing right now (when they are outta sinc, which is most of the game). I've never seen such an unproductive offense. But I think moreover than that, it's our defense as well, which I'll get into later. But the offense can't even establish a QB all year long. It's been Freddie most of the way, but all I hear is "play Tucker"..."play Freddie"...everyone has their favorite, but when you look at the facts, neither one has been very productive. Tucker started the game today very well, but then later in the game when he was QB, it was like the offense STILL fell apart. We couldn't catch, we couldn't throw, we couldn't run North-South, poor blocking...etc. You name it, this offense is the worst Bama has had in years. And you can't really point to one or even 2 people. Just about every aspect of our offense is weak. Nothing is solid this year. We have nothing that has worked for us all the time, which is what you need in order to win games. The ONLY thing consistent this year is the punting of Danial Pope (Bama MVP this year - he gets my vote). Our QB's are off, our RB's are inconsistent, WR's can't catch most of the time, not enough passes to the TE, offensive line is always confused... There is a game here and a game there where one of these spots really shines, but then the next game or 2, they are totally dead. That's why the offense has done nothing. Running/passing hasn't been on the same page the whole year. It's a team effort, and when the whole team doesn't do well, it's gonna be hard to win games. Take our running game this year...Alex/Alex start with Riddle suspended...Bama does very well. Riddle becomes the #1 guy...later, Curtis becomes the starter...later Riddle moves to 3rd string and touches the ball one time in a game...Curtis is starting again, but Riddle starts doing good again...the roller coaster never ends. We're just too inconsistent to contend right now...and the numbers/scores have proved it.

But today, there were some good plays...not many, but to name a couple, Riddle pass to Tucker for TD, and Riddle for the run for TD. Those were some bright spots, but it's really too bad they were overshadowed by the bad plays...running East/West on 3-1 two times and not making it, dropping passes, etc. It's gotta stop if we have any mole of a chance against Awbun next week. Basically, this offense is confused. Last drive for Bama - 3-and-out. You're not gonna win many games doing that, much less getting negative yardage on drives (Bama had 2-3 of those against MSU). Like I said last week, I'll play coach.

DEFENSE was offensive as well. I can still smell the stinch here in Dallas, TX. I WILL give the D credit for 3 times when MSU had 1st and Goal and we stopped them from getting in the end zone. That's the only thing that KINDA kept us with some sense of hope. But the big plays that the Tide gave up really crushed the team. Big running plays and 3rd-and-long pass plays that we gave up are just unacceptable. You'd think that from the past, if Bama scored 20 points, that would be enough to win, but not anymore. Now you need 30+ points to win games, and even then, that might not be enough (KY 40-34). I think that next year on D will be very similar to this year unless something major changes. I mean, we'll have the same basic people we have this year with a year's more experience. But these are the same people that don't know how to tackle. Makes me wonder if we'll learn how to tackle in less than a year's time. I don't see much improvement in that area right now...but maybe I'm wrong. One player that really stood out in the MSU game was Travis Carroll (Freshman LB). He will be the nest great LB at the Capstone in my opinion. He was standing up their running back a few times, and makes solid tackles. You're not gonna run over this guy, I'll tell ya that. 3 more years of an athelete this good is just what the doctor ordered...now if we can only get all of our other players playing like that, then the Bama D would be back up there with the big boys. Our D IS hurting though. Having Fernando Bryant get knocked out of the game didn't help. Injuries have hurt us badly this year, not to mention the suspension of Myers. Don't really know what else to say here except if we'd learn HOW to tackle, we'd be ok. Oh, and giving up nearly 300 yards RUSHING doesn't help either. I remember when it took 5-6 games for the D to give up that many yards on the ground....<Sigh...> Nuff said. Coach, I KNOW HOW TO TACKLE!! LET ME PLAY!!

Special Teams - Same ol' story. I've come to expect nothing more from special teams anymore. The only sure thing is Daniel Pope (Bama MVP) anymore. I wonder if he can do anything besides punt. :) We were lucky the punt we fumbled got called back by a holding call or that would have cost us. Missed Extra Points are still killing us. How can we EVER expect to try for a FG when we can't even hit an XP right in front of the goal post? I sometimes wonder if we could hit the big side of a barn....what is up with our kicking game??? Cunningham was 12-21 on FG's so Dismukes came in and went 2-3 on XP's. That should be 3-3...no excuses can be made except for a bad snap, which there wasn't any. Proctor, in his 4 years at the Capstone, missed only ONE extra point...that's consistency we must have. I wonder if it still exists at Bama anymore....nothing seems to be consistent anymore...except for us giving up 400+ yds/game and letting the other team convert big play after big play. I just don't know what's wrong with us anymore.

Coaching is the same. Let's get rid of some people. It is VERY obvious (even as DuBose has said) that the coaches don't have what it takes to keep the players motivated and intense in the game. If you can't keep the players playing to their full potential, something's wrong. This needs to change. Play calling is pathetic. Sure we have a play here and a play there, but you look at the overall game plan - it's not there. It's no wonder we have a losing season. Even with the games we've won, it was still VERY sad looking to see our offense/team play. It's like we don't know how to play the game anymore. Maybe it's just me...who knows.

Next Week: Auburn Look for Bama to lose yet another game and end up at 4-7 on the year. That's only 4 games. Who'da thunk we would have ONLY won 4 games???? That's just unthinkable if you ask me. I remember when we were expected to win...now I know how the other teams usually feel when they HOPE to win...cuz that's what we're doing now - Hoping to win. AU hasn't ever lost to the Tide in Jordan-Hare Stadium, and next week shouldn't be any different. With a Tide defense that give up more points than my weight, and an offense that looks as confused as a stirred up anthill, I don't see victory in our future. Add in the fact that we must now "go for it" on 4th down inside the 30 (anywhere in front of the goal line) cuz we can't hit a FG, we basically have to score in 6's (7 if we happen to hit an extra point). So if Awbun scores 30 points, we must score at least 5 touchdowns and hit one of those extra points to win the game. I don't see Bama scoring 5 touchdowns, so that's why Awbun will win. And I DO see Awbun scoring 30 points because they are a passing team, and we (at this point) have no DB's that can cover Awbun's WR's. We will be in for a LOOONG afternoon next weekend. It might even be the biggest loss of the season. I'd LOVE to be optimistic, but I'm dealing with reality...something that we have to deal with after the game. Anyway, the players on both sides will be pumped up, so you can throw out the stat book (which is cool since it doesn't cover NOT knowing how to tackle)...this is the IRON BOWL. All I can say is play hard, and don't give up...don't ever give up. Oh, and one more thing - PUT ME IN COACH!! I REALLY WANT TO PLAY!!! I AM SERIOUS!!!!!!! ROLL TIDE!!!

LSU - Bama is shut out...0-27, (4-5), (2-4)

Ok, enough is enough. Bama football as we know it has dropped to it's lowest level since '84...could be even worse if we lose our last 2 games (which is very possible since we are playing ranked teams). I say keep the faith, but gees Louise...after seeing our team play Saturday, it's very hard to do so. I mean, we're inside the 20, but because our FG Special Teams is so shaky, we have to go for it on 4th down. What has happened to Bama?....

Offense from what I could tell played well enough to almost win. We moved the ball pretty well between the 20's, but just gave up when we got down close to the end zone. And what's with the fumbled snap on the goal line for LSU's first TD? Plain and simple...to put it....it is crap. Either these guys are motivated, or they just don't have the talent. Maybe they have neither...which makes me think "Why are they even in the game?" I'll play, Coach! I can even catch....I promise. I'll be the 12th man (like Texas A&M)...I can tackle...and I can prove it. I play flag football...come watch me play. I CAN CATCH!! So put me in, Coach.

Defense played an "ok" game to say the least. I mean, you can't expect them to play a full game on 3-5 plays and out. But even so, they still tackled like girls (that's a quote from my fiance') and don't make the plays they have to make to win games. One question: Why in the fart was DeShea AND Bryant on the sideline when Feagin got burnt on the TD bomb? Feagin (I'm sorry, bud) is our worst cover man on D. I'd feel more comfortable with K.Bailey than Feagin. He's been burnt so much this season (plus bad tackling), he's black on his rear end (burnt toast). Another thing...Bailey is good, but why was he on Larry Foster in coverage? He was LSU's BEST WR. We need to have experience on experience. I know Foster lined up in the slot position...I guess Bryant and Bailey aren't allowed to switch...but having freshman on their best WR doesn't make much sense. In any case, the D just played poorly, but with the non-help of Special Teams and the offense not putting the ball in the end zone, what more can you expect. They have nothing to protect either. Man...oh...man...I just don't know what else to say...

Special Teams - same story week after week lately. Can't hit a FG if our life depended on it. I saw Cunningham's frustration after he missed his FG's...I feel sorry for him, but at the same time..you've just gotta hit those. And if I'm not mistaken (I didn't get to see it on TV), I don't think they were blocked either (except for 1)....he just hooked 'em. We have GOT to start hitting the FG attempts if we have ANY chance of survival these last 2 games of the year (yes, of the year...cuz we're not goin' to a bowl now for sure...even at 6-5). I just don't know what to say other than this is the worst Tide team I've EVER seen. I hate it for the guys, but that's just the facts. 0-3 in Bryant-Denny Stadium...first time ever that has happened...also the worst blowout in Bryant-Denny Stadium ever...also the first time we've been shutout since 0-35 shalacking at Florida in '91...and last shutout at home since '90 when we lost to Penn St. 9-0 for Homecoming (and what was the deal with THAT scheduling???). Anyway, I'm sure there were even more records set (and not the good ones, I might add)...but I won't go there. I think everyone sees what's goin' on right now. Bama is at a very low point right now, and teams are finally coming out and taking advantage of the situation (La.Tech, Kentucky, Arkansas). Makes you think about the ticket prices going up this year and seeing the worst product in years here at the University. I mean, if you're gonna raise prices, at least put a product out on the field that's worth watching, ya knowutimean? That's just common sense. Makes me wonder if we'll even sellout next year's upper deck as well. If Bama's this bad next year, the attendance will slack off so much, it will be unreal (see Miami now...their stands are only about 1/3 full nowadays). The Tradition MUST continue next year (no, not THIS year's tradition) if we still want good recruits to come in here. We're gonna be lucky to get what we are. Tyler Watts made a good decision in coming here...cuz he KNOWS Bama needs a QB...only, will we utilyze him like we should, or waste his talent? Only time will tell.

I DID see DuBose a couple of times in the Defense area on the sidelines after a series was up (after giving up a TD). To me, I think he just needs to become DC/HC next year. He knows what the D should be, so we don't really need someone else wasting space anyway. Plus, if he's gonna let the OC take control in the offense and not make any decisions (except to go for it on 4th down or not), he SHOULD take care of the D himself. Remember....I'll play coach! I can tackle!!

Up next is MSU - how we handle this is anyone's guess. The Dawgs are #17 in the country with a 6-2 record. They shutout Awbun...so putting us away might not be that hard either, especially if we show up like we did against LSU. We have GOT to put the ball into the end zone. What we are doing now will JUST NOT CUT IT - not for me, you, or DuBose. Things MUST change NOW. Bama just doesn't have losing seasons. BEAT MSU!!! Nuff said.

COACH PUT ME IN!!! I'll Play!!!

LA.TECH - Bama struggles badly...loses 20-26, (4-4), (2-3)

Man, just when you think the Tide is back on track, well, back to the new and improved Tide of 1997. I really don't know what to say. I went, I saw, I wept. What more is there to say? The Tide of old is no longer. And I don't know where they went either. Let's make it short and sweet this week (since I'm on-campus for this week).

The Offense was offensive in my opionion. The ONLY real spark for the crowd was Chad Goss's shuckin' and jivin' that got him his TD. I was right there in front of him, and he just would NOT be denied the end zone. He stopped, spun, juked the defender, then stretched out the ball to break the plane of the goal line. Other than that, I was pretty bored to say the least. Calvin Hall's catch was a good sign...it just means we can catch the ball a LITTLE better now. Right now, I don't think Bama could catch a cold. :( I guess Shaun was injured still from last week and coach wanted to save him more for this week's game against LSU. I don't know. He didn't play untill the very last kickoff return by La.Tech. He was one of the deep return men. I saw we had almost 400 yds of offense, but still couldn't win the game, mainly cuz La.Tech got even more against the new Bama defense that is not what is used to be. We are giving up more points and more yards than I can ever remember. You'd think that if Bama could score even 20 points, we'd win the game. The D just doesn't give up THAT many points until this year. On the average, Bama usually gives up around 15-17 pts/game. Now we're giving up 40,38, 26. You just don't win when you give up that many points (and those games, we didn't win). The Offense isn't really doing THAT bad though. We put up 127 yds rushing and 262 passing, which isn't half bad for Bama's offense. What's killing Bama is the fact that we GIVE UP too many points and don't convert on special teams (FG's mainly). Freddie's done well this year...not an all-star year, but he's gotten done what he's capable of. Heck, even Riddle got decent yardage in the La.Tech game. But sometimes, we're just not making the plays we need to. Dropped passes are really killing us. I know the ball was wet, but we've just gotta do better. There's no excuse because both teams are playing under the same conditions. La.Tech's WR's caught the ball ok, so we should too. RB's did ok. Nothing spectacular this week, but we didn't fumble, which was good. Freddie didn't throw any int's...good job there. Overall, and average day for the offense...but red zone needs to be much better. We can't have a good drive stall like it's been doing the last few games. Get that part better, and the O will be ok.

The Defense...who woulda ever thought you'd hear people complaining about the Bama D? I didn't think such a day would ever come. In years past, the D is what has kept us IN games...not OUT of games! We only forced La.Tech to punt 2 times. That should tell you enough...of course, they DID go for it a couple of times I believe...but most of the time, they just drove the length of the field and we couldn't stop them, plain and simple. Soln: play 1-on-1...man-to-man coverage. If that's what our DB's can play the best, go for it. It's time for the young guys in the middle to start taking action so our CB's don't have to "babysit". Practically every time we lineup on D, our guys are 10 yds off the ball...of course the WR is gonna get more yards giving them THAT kind of cushion. We have GOT to play man or we're doomed. Our record should speak for itself. What do we have to lose now. Let's see if man-on-man coverage CAN work for us now...cuz ZONE ain't. DL needs to get the QB even more. Not enough sacks to satisfy me or anyone else for that matter. LB's need to wrap up the ball carrier better. Still too many missed tackles...you name it, we've NOT done it. Same thing as weeks past... <sigh...>

Special teams can just leave this team. Let's not even go for FG's or XP's anymore. It's time we just used 4 downs (or 3 and punt) to get the job done. Ok, that's an exaggeration, but that what I feel like doing every time we botch a kick. I've never seen Bama special teams in such POOR condition (and POOR is giving them the benefit of the doubt). We can't tackle on Special teams, and FG's are just luck if we make them. I just wanna close my eyes when we kick FG/XP's now. It's too scary to look. Pope still get's my Heisman vote. He's the most consistent of everyone on STeams this year. 45 yd average is hard to contest. He's done a great job. Also, Lance Tucker did a great job pooch kicking. Now if only the D can stop them from going 90+ yds for the score, we'll be ok. Coaching can still get better. These players just ain't motivated at all. They're just goin' thru the motions. They don't seem to play with passion, except for Freddie (it seems). There are other players playing hard, but he's the only one who stands out as giving 100% of his being. All our players need that attitude. Next year, the Def. Coord.(Ellis) needs to take a hike along with Bruce Arians, the off.coord. I'm not just saying that from the 1st year jitters. He has not been on a winning team his whole coaching career, if I'm not mistaken. He came from the Saints (or should I say, the Ain'ts), and what happened there?? We need success to breed success, and I just don't think he's gonna bring it to the Capstone. Maybe I'm totally wrong, but that's just my view. Since DuBose lets the OC take charge of the whole offense (unlike Gene), maybe we should bring back Homer Smith...let him work his magic with our new QB's next year. Plus we have Tyler Watts in the stable for next year too...that might not be a bad idea. Remember Gary Hollingsworth before Gene came to town...a potential all-star under the Smith offense. Anyway, somethng to think about.

Penalties just killed Bama (not to mention poor tackling) this past game. 9 penalties don't help anyone but the other team. By George if we can't remember that the count is on HUT HUT, then just make it on HUT. This is rediculous. We are too far into the season to be making these dumb mistakes. Of course, there were some VERY BAD calls made by the refs in the game as well. Normally, I don't dis the refs, but it was a very poorly called game. This is the first time all year I've mentioned the refs...so far they've done ok till now. But it was really a very poorly called game. Too many no-calls when penalty should be called on La.Tech. It actually might have helped us out in a few instances...we'll never know...but those calls have to be made.

OVERALL, another lousy performance for special teams and yes, the Bama D. We've got to start making plays and STOP dropping balls that should be intercepted. It's time for people to step up and MAKE PLAYS. We just can't keep giving teams more opportunies to score TD's this year. We're gonna get creamed. Now since AU lost, Bama is still mathematically in the race for the SEC East. MSU, Ole Miss, AU, and LSU are all ahead of us. We've beaten Ole Miss, so that's one down. The other 3 teams all have 2 losses to our 3. So if we win out, we still go to the SEC Championship. I KNOW it's a long shot, especially after last week's performance...but LSU is just the first step. Its time to put up. No more crap, Bama. It's time to play BAMA-BALL. We lose against LSU, and it looks like a losing season for us. AU helped us out, so let's take advantage. I'll be in the student section rooting the Tide on...Let's win, baby! I'm tired of losing!! ROLL TIDE!!! Here's to Shaun Alexander getting another 250+ yd outing against the Bayou Bengals....

OLE MISS - Bama bounces back to whip the Rebels 29-20, (4-3), (2-3)

YeeeeHaaawww!!! Bama wins! Bama wins!! It's been 3 weeks since the Tide has put a win in the win column. Man, how long has it been since that happened?? What was it...1993 when the Tide lost 2 in a row (AU,FL)? Anyway, I was REEEEEALLY worried the first half of this game. It was looking like the weeks of the Arkansas, Kentucky, TN...heck, all of 'em. We just haven't been playing worth a crap lately and today was "do or die" time for the Tide, and we got the job done in the 2nd half, even though we STILL made it interesting. Gees, Louise! :) Let's start with the Big O...

The Offense did very well this game. We coughed the ball up a couple of times, but we moved the ball, which is a VERY good sign. We seem to have gotten our head out of our butts (pardon the butt word) and started playing like Bama SHOULD be playing (except for special teams...and yeah, you bet I'm gonna talk about that later...). Freddie. Great game, dude. You are the man. Of course, you could still lay off a little speed off those short passes...man, it's hard to catch a 90mph fastball when you're only 10 yds away. :) Great run for the TD. We REALLY needed that drive AND score to cap off the 1st half. Being down 14-0 at the half would have been devistating to our team's moral. That was big...REALLY BIG. As I was watching the replay of that play, I can't figure out why Riddle was looking at Freddie the whole time. I mean, c'mon Riddle, you were only 5 yds ahead of him. BLOCK for him for Pete's sake. He coulda made it in much easier if he just gets a block there instead of watching him. Same for Jackson on the other side where Freddie ran it in. No blocking for Freddie at all. That run was ALL Freddie, and my hat's off to him. Great Job.

Curtis, Shaun, (grunt) Riddle - Good job on the ground today. Good running by all the backs. Curtis got things goin' with that monster 56 yd run to take the lead, one that Bama wouldn't give up the rest of the game. Riddle has a 60+ yd run for TD later in the game, but from the looks of it, Ole Miss was just tired by that point. I will give Riddle credit though...he was slow, but just when the guy caught him, he slowed down game him a little swipe and moved him outta the way for the score. But then he had an almost VERY costly fumble at the end of the game...gees, Louise, dude...hang on to the ball. Good outing by all the RB's. I don't know the numbers right now, but I'm pretty sure we got close to 300 yds on the ground. We'll see. Offensive Line, good job, but still some misses assignments. I don't think Freddie was sacked all day. And since we did get some great yds on the ground, you know the OL is doing their job for the most part. That hole that Scissum help create for Alexander's TD, you coulda drove a Mack truck thru there. :) What can you say about Scissum? Great hands, overall great player to have. Blocks well. We're gonna miss him next year.

The Defense played a heckuva game with one MAJOR exception, which mainly cost us in the first half. TACKLE GUYS!!! TACKLE!!!! I can NOT stress that enough. I don't know HOW many times we let guys slip through our fingers and get 5-10-20 more yards or a TD because we can't wrap the guy up. This was mostly a problem in the 1st half..we did do better in the 2nd half though. But we have to get better (as I've stressed all season) if we're gonna compete against the better teams (or even the wussy teams). These arm tackles should be a thing of the past, because they don't work. As far as pass coverage, things looked pretty good, but looked best in the 2nd half when we kept their offense off the field. Credit the offense here though. We also had good penetration to the QB. I was VERY pleased with our DL and LB rush in the backfield...only we still MUST make those plays IN THE BACKFIELD that we let get away. Too many times we have them for a loss and they still get 5 yds because we are either arm-tackling them, or we tackle them from behind and push them forward for the extra yds. We've got to start hitting them from the front. One last thing...Learn to TACKLE. Have I already mentioned that? :) One thing that really concerns me on D is D.Townsend. He pulled that hamstring on the blocked extra point and it looked pretty bad. He may sit out for La. Tech and wait till LSU to play again. We are gonna need him for LSU...that MIGHT be the plan. Get well dude...we need ya!

Let's skip to Coaching since the other phase of the game really irks me right now. Offensive play calling this time was much better from what I could tell. We were down 14-0, but it wasn't because of the offense (except we SHOULDA put them in the end zone instead of FG tries). We piled up 217 yds in the first half, but only had 7 points. We controlled the game yet a few plays really killed us (See Special teams). We ran the ball from the I-formation a lot more, which is what Bama has really done very well in the past. And from what I hear, S.Alexander is really a better runner when he's in the I-formation. When you have Scissum up there blocking for you, you know you're gonna get a few more yards. Of course, we seem to be using that formation with S.Alex. behind the TE and goin' into motion. I like what we've been doing with that, especially when we faked it to him and hit Scissum. I was even expecting Shaun to get the ball. I mean, that's basically HIS formation/play. Good twist to that got us 6. Also, I don't know what it was, but it seemed like we had a better defensive scheme this go-around. We still played zone, but, well, I guess we weren't playing the Heisman Trophey front-runner either, huh? Couch is also a good QB. Patridge did a good job, but for once, we finally made the QB pressured a little more like what we've done in the past. Don't know if we had major adjustments, but I liked it. I think I speak for all Bamafans when I say we liked it. I think one thing they could improve on is time management (Time outs). We take timeouts for the dumbest things. Generally, we use them for not having enough time on the play clock (how does that happen after a kickoff???). We need to work on that...cuz one game, we're gonna NEED those timeouts and not have them. It could definitely cost us. One more thing I've noticed ALL season long: Why don't we go to the no-huddle offense more? We have SO much success in the no-huddle it's unreal. It doesn't give the D time to make changes and get set as well. Just like the last drive in the 1st half...we seem to play better with the no-huddle. Just a mere suggestion. I like what I see thus far using the no-huddle... OH, and ONE last thing on the coaching. I lift M.DuBose up for not playing Tucker in the 2nd half on the 3rd series. This isn't a game to put in someone JUST to let them play...normally, he goes in, and it's a 3-and-out series which can kill momentum. I think DuBose for keeping what worked for us : Freddie Kitchens leading our offense. I still say he shouldn't come in at all. I have nothing against Tucker, but he is just NOT the man right now. We sure don't need ANY wasted drives either. He is a great place-holder...and that should be his role. Heck, if anything, the smart thing would be to play JDPhillips, but ONLY at the end of a game where we've surely won the game. Remember, Kitchens and Tucker will be gone next year. Phillips will be the man coming out of Spring Practice with either Zow or Watts the 2nd man. I say only play him in games where the game is won though. He needs to get experience which means Bama has to play big at the beginning of the game so these 2nd/3rd stringers can get playing time. Hopefully, that will happen come HC next week. But overall, good gameplan...back to the running game - power football, Bama style. Who is special teams coach?? I'm about to hop on that now...

Dadgum those freakin' Special Teams of Alabama. I can see one mistake, but freakin' 4 or more??? Get real! This has GOT to stop:

1. Dropped punt return/fumble/other team scores
2. Blocked FG
3. Missed FG
4. Blocked Extra point
5. Misses Extra point
6. Kickoff outta bounds/other teams starts at 35
7. 100 yd return on kickoff/other team gets 6 pts.
8. POOR tackling (as usual).
9. Possible partial block on a punt (looked like one was partially blocked)

Does the list ever stop for this Bama special teams unit?? What is up with all that crap? I could go on and on and on and on and on and on and on about how bad we played on Special teams, but I'm not. I think the list speaks for itself and MUST improve. That was just the LOUSIEST effort I've EVER seen out of Bama special teams. It was to put it lightly, pathetic and pitiful. You take away these stupid mistakes, and Bama wins 37-6 at least. Maybe we get another score if we don't fumble that punt...but it does take their score away. How can we make a game we dominate for the most part so close? We missed 8 pts just on special teams. Gave them the 100yd return (6pts) and before, 7pts on the drive where we fumbled the punt. If we lose this game, I think the special teams coach should get the boot. There's just NO excuse for these types of mistakes. Of course, the fumble/missed kicks should be handled by the players...there's just no excuse for ANY of it. I just thank goodness we won the game.

Well, just checked out the stats, and go RB's and WR's! C.A with 141 yds, Riddle for 90, and Shaun for 51. And of course Freddie with the 8 yd scamper for TD for a 20 yd total on the day. We did however get big plays, which boosts that per/yd average, but the main thing is that we ran the ball well. We finally created some holes and played power Bama football. I will give Riddle credit this week for the great run, but he's still gotta get better the rest of the time. Not counting the 68 yd run for TD, he still averaged less than 2.5 yds/carry. He's still the 3rd man though, unless one of the Alexanders is hurt for La.Tech. They are just too good. WR's...mainly the play of Quincy Jackson. He had 5 catches for 119 yds. But one thing that I'm most proud of is the fact that we actually CAUGHT the ball this week. We had freakin' butterfingers last week against TN...let's hope we don't get that syndrome anymore. Still have room for improvement though. We need to get Kitchens and the WR's on just a bit better wavelengthe and THEN we'll be dangerous. Something is just wrong with our timing or something. But we did find the open man though...good job. And before I go, just to prove the lack of tackling on our team...Avery had 148 yds rushing (not counting the 100 yd return for TD on special teams). Of course, I WILL say this: That guy looks SOOO much like Barry Sanders it ain't even funny. He put moves on us that the NFL would be proud of. And that sucker is fast as lightning. But we shouldn't let that stop us. We've got to learn to tackle better...but hats off to Avery for and absolute OUTSTANDING game. Wish he was on our side cuz he's a great back.

Next week: La.Tech for Homecoming. Let's not lose on Homecoming, Bama. We can beat this team...so just do it. NOTE: I will be at the La.Tech game in the student section, and will be in T-town for the whole week following HC, leading up to the LSU game, so I'll be making updates to the page there on campus when I get time. For HC, I'll be in the alumni band there for pregame on the field. I'll have on the red Bama hardhat as usual... I'll be at the LSU game as well in the student section. If anyone wants to meet with me for lunch or something while I'm there, page me at 1(888)898-4270...and punch in a call-back number...it's a free call. Take care everyone, and may the Tide Roll for Homecoming! ROLL TIDE!!

TENNESSEE - Bama can't "catch" up...Bama loses 21-38, (3-3), (1-3)

The 3rd Saturday in October has passed, and well, it wasn't like the 3rd Saturday's (October) of old either. Bama took another beating in Birmingham by TN, and by the senior QB Peyton Manning. Overall, the excitement was there (the first quarter), but we failed to utilyze the home field advantage. Instead, it was like a graveyard (well, at least most of the game). I was in the student section, and it was loud when we moved the ball AND GOT A FIRST DOWN. man, if that's all you have to cheer for, something's wrong. Anyway, the game started out like normal...lots of adrenalyne and excitement.......and Bama getting FG's instead of TD's. That's where we mess up more than anything. We got ONE sack the whole game, and it was their first drive when D.Townsend came in on a corner blitz. Peyton wasn't touched the rest of the game. All he did was do what Tim Couch did to us...carve us up like a Thanksgiving turkey. What's up with that? I could hardly bear to watch the game at all, especially the 2nd half. We still had hope when it was 21-6, but once they pulled away again, that hope was lost. My main gripe about this game was about our guys not being able to catch the ball, which I will address later...let's start with the D, shall we?

Defense - Gees, Louise!! Keep that adrenalyne goin' the WHOLE game. We always come out smokin' and rarin' to go and then we die for some reason. I listened in to DuBose sometime this week and someone addressed why we don't play man-on-man as much...his answer - We don't have the quality backups at corner, and playing man, you get tired, so you tend to play more zone than you want (paraphrasing). I agree with him, but when you get burnt as much as we are, and you're gettin' no pressure up the middle on the QB, someone has to step up and be able to play that backup spot so you can play man. It's no wonder we didn't get burnt for 400 yds+ Sat. Most of the time, we gave them 10yd. cushions which means and turn, catch, and run got them about 5-10 yds because we were so far back on them. That's NOT how you're gonna beat TN (or any good passing team ie. Awbun too). Some of the new guys are gonna have to play the position next year anyway, so why don't we go ahead and get them some experience so we CAN play man as well and cut back some of the passing yds.? If we don't play these guys, we're gonna hurt next year as well. Maybe we just don't have the talent, I don't know. Scholarship reductions DO hurt ya in that respect, so I can understand that. We've got to come up with a better scheme though if we have any chance to beat the upcoming teams (even La.Tech).

I remember 2 pass plays where PM threw into double coverage and STILL the WR caught the ball. It was awesome coverage, but we just couldn't get a hand in there. We've got to use our hands more. We are gettin' burnt way too many times. And again, I ask...PLEASE TACKLE, don't hit them and push them outta bounds like girls. If you're gonna play a man's sport, you have to play like men.... Now, as LB, ok, but could use better tackling skills as well. DL, man, not one sack all day. Maybe we're lacking in talent here. Our DL has been inaffective all year so far. Even with a Michael Myers, we're still hurting at this position. Somebody step up, PLEASE?!

Offense still seems to be sputtering and dying as usual. I can say usual because we have played like this every game of the season (minus Houston). The best drive of the day (Ii thought) was were we just gave the ball to Shaun Alexander and he rushed EVERY time and MADE TN make the plays (which they had a hard time doing). And then when they FINALLY focused on Shaun, we pass the ball to Ed Scissum for the TD. THAT was an excellent play call, one that is very rare. Shaun proved 2 things on Saturday - (1) He's the man when RUNNING the ball...he has legs like an ox and keeps the momentum goin' North-South. (2) - He can't catch very well. For a running back to be complete, he must be able to run well, block well when asked, NOT fumble, and catch the ball on the dump-off plays. Shaun can do 1 of these 4 very well...blocking has been a problem (as reported by the coaches, but I don't see the problem), running is the thing he does the best, catching the ball he has GOT to work on...catch the ball THEN run with it, and then fumbles. He seems to be a little bit fumble prone, especially when he's trying to get a few more yards. He's gotta tuck that ball away a LOT better than what he's been doing. He's been VERY lucky so far in that most of his fumbles have been recovered by the Tide. I think next year, when he is our main weapon, we'll see him improve in all of these areas. As for Curtis, yds/rush still down...Shaun is the man. Curtis needs to be used like TN's RB's as well coming across the middle for the short pass for big yardage. We tried that once, but had it deflected and Freddie caught his own pass. If we can get Curtis in the open field with the ball, he can be a real threat. Riddle, not one carry, which is good. He hasn't proved anything this year...will be good in FB situations (which he played in the TN game). He had one opportunity to catch the ball and he dropped it. We've just gotta catch the freakin' ball. Freddie - he had a good game dispite the stats. He had an interception (which was a bad decision, by the way on the double coverage pass), but it was like a punt which we were about to do anyway. He hit the receivers I don't know how many times, but we kept on dropping the ball. We musta had 10-12 passes that we just dropped that were right on the money. Freddie can't be at fault in this game. He was mounting a comeback, but when you can't catch, that's gonna be hard to do. Please, WR's, RB's...back to fundamentals on how to catch a football. We REALLY need that part of our game back!!

Special Teams saw a punt blocked on what looked to be little to no effort in blocking for Pope (That was worded weird). Anyway, I watched the rush, and it was like we had a screen or something planned, only they didn't tell Pope. :) Actually it's sad because there was NO way of him getting the ball off in time. C'mon guys...this is our MVP this year and THIS is how you treat him?? Gees, Louise... Anyway, Cunningham did well, and Diaz kept the ball between the white lines again (good job there!). My main concern with S.Teams is punt/kick coverage. How many more times are we gonna let the opposing return man back to the 40 yd line. Where is the tackling?? Man, what has happened to our team? Please get better, man...

Coaching - Too predictable, but even with the offense being predictable with Shaun running the ball, he made things happen, which really gives me confidence in next year's running game (if we get him the ball 30 times/game). Still need to go to Rutledge a LOT more. I think he got 2 passes the whole game. All Stars not being utilyzed is sooo unfortunate. It's really too bad we don't get him the ball more. See Carolina Panthers and how they get the ball to Wesley Walls a lot. You can really kill a team with the TE. We should try it. YEAAA!!! Only 3 penalties for the Tide Saturday. That was the ONE highlight that really made me happy. Of course, I'd take 30 more points even with 10 more penalties... :) For once, the defensive line stayed on their side of the ball...I was pleased about that. Coaches musta either said something or the players finally figured out that that doesn't help an opposing drive to jump offsides. Good job there.

OVERALL, a lousy performance. Only 200 and some odd yds of total offense on the day with a blocked punt, and people dropping the ball left and right. When will the nightmare end for Bama? It's looking pretty bleak for even a 6-5 season. Let's just HOPE we can come up with that. Wish I had better comments for the game, but not much really stood out as being "good". What was good, I've addressed already. One last thing, just remember, keep the faith, Bama Nation. ok? We're REALLY feeling the probation effects on us now, plus inexperience at the Head Coaching position can really hurt a team. We'll be back strong, so be patient (which is hard for most Bama fans because of our excellent past). Let's not jump the gun on getting rid of DuBose yet. Give him a chance. He has limited players and is doing the best job he can. No one's a bigger fan than Mike DuBose. He's been there, and he knows where he wants to take the program, even though we're not playing like it. Keep the faith...and Let's Beat Ole Miss this weekend! ROLL TIDE!!!

KENTUCKY - Bama gets nailed 34-40, (3-2), (1-2)

EEEK!! Kentucky beats Bama...1st time in 75 years! Ya know it's a bad time when that happens, huh? Well, It's Wednesday before the Tennesse game and a lot has happened since I saw the game (plus the Florida beating by LSU), so I'll make this short and save more comments for the Tennessee game, ok? Sorry so late gettin' my comments in, but I have been SUPER busy...been in Portland, OR, almost all of last week and went to the dentist today...gees, Louise! I'm finally gettin' around to makin' my take on the game... :)

From what I remember 2 weeks ago, the team played like they wanted to win, but didn't want to win. That sounds dumb, but it's late and that's how I feel at this particular moment. We were pumped, but didn't STAY pumped. We would hold Kentucky to 3rd down, but not hold them all the way (they would get a 1st). This team has got to have some major improvements if we're gonna make ANY noise in the West this year. Conceivably, we can still win the west, even though there's a better chance of me becoming a woman. If Bama wins out and AU loses to Florida this weekend, we go to Atlanta. Only thing is that if that happens, we'll be playing Florida AGAIN to defend the Bear's record. In a way, I want AU to beat FL, but mainly for the Bear's record's sake. Anyway, back to Kentucky (what happened there?)...the offense sputtered, but still put up 34 points. When was the last time Bama scored 34 points AND LOST?? Our D can't be allowing that type of scoring or we'll never win that game. Tennessee is gonna roll all over us if we don't score. Their O is solid and so is their D. It MUST be a mistake-free game (man, I keep gettin' off the subject). Curtis and Shaun VERY MUCH showed that they are the men that will carry the ball the rest of the season. Dennis merely proved he was good the past 2 years, but better talent has showed up in the backfield. Nothing against Dennis, but he's not the best man for the job anymore. If Scissum can't play in a down, Riddle should be the fullback. And that's it. DuBose has finally realized that we can't rotate in 3 backs and get the production we need to win. Enough of that... that situation has been a given the past couple of weeks. Receivers - Chad Goss is awesome. He can do it all. Like I tell everyone, he is just the smaller version of Chad Key. He's got great hands, and he's one of the few players that uses his head, meaning brain. He's prolly the smartest guy we have on offense. Rutledge - throw more to this all-star!!!! We did better in the KY game, but he still needs more.

One quick question - why can't our receivers get open like the other teams? I mean, a "dig" across the middle is what we get burnt on more than anything on D, but yet we can't incorporate it into our offense. Something's gotta give. Our passing schemes just seem like little league style. Either it's the players can't get open (due to just being a bad play), or the coaches aren't coaching like they should. Whenever we DO get a completion (for the most part), it's usually a catch, then down right there. We don't seem to be getting many yards after the catch (except for throwing to the backs, and that only works sometimes). KY kept throwing to the backs all day long and got MEGA yardage. Something is wrong with our system or something...but that stuff's gotta improve if the O is gonna be successful.

Freddie Kitchens hasn't done bad the last 3 games. He hasn't thrown the big yards, but hasn't thrown for any turnovers. That's key to winning games...gotta hang on to the ball. This week will really be a challenge for him. TN's D this year is like the D of the Bama of old. They are very solid on D. Look for Bama to run the ball quite a bit more against TN if Shaun/Curtis can get some big yards on 1st down. But like I was saying, Freddie's been doing well, and in my opinion, if he's driving the ball down the field, there SHOULD NOT be ANY substitution at the QB position. I like to see Tucker play, but if we are on a roll and then throw a wrench in the engine, we're gonna sputter and that MIGHT just be the spark TN needs to get back in the game (if they're even out of it). Freddie's the man, and he's proved it the last few games. He's not the best in the world, but he's the best Bama's got right now. So stick with him and don't worry about making people on the sidelines (players) happy just so they can play. Remember, the best man needs to be out on the field.

Defense - very disappointed, but with all the injuries we had and the depth problem, I can see why we are struggling. If we don't get some key players back soon, we're in trouble. Oh, and #20, Sigler, again, he has GOT to improve his defensive skills. He had 2 int's against KY, but my grandma coulda caught them. He was in the right place at the right time. His tackling has GOT to improve. RB's WR's are making him look like a gnat as they swat him off of them. And what's up with DeShae Townsend? All-America? I think not. There were high expectations, but I've never really been sold on him because he can't tackle either, unless it's a quick out and the defender hasn't had a chance to turn around yet to run - then and only then will he make a big hit. He's had MANY chances to make picks on the QB but hasn't made the plays - plays that an All-American makes. Bryant has been more impressive in my eyes. DeShae, get some stickum on those gloves! And stop getting burnt deep. If the receiver reaches out for the ball, stick your hand up there and deflect it...don't let the guy catch it, then push him out of bounds...Gees Louise. :) Impress me, man...impress me. It's time to show why you are the man...Let's go! Roll Tide! LB's are doing an ok job. Pickett and Harris seem to be leading the bunch this year. When we blitz, we've gotta make sure we get someone in there. From what I hear, we will be using a 3-4 defense against TN. Against KY, we did ok and got to T.Couch a few times, but he still completed too many passes for my taste. We've just gotta cover better against the WR's if the D is gonna hold.

Special Teams - good job except that LUCKY freakin' block/catch to score the TD that put KY up. If not for that block, I think Bama wins the game. Cunningham has done a good job this season, but needs to be PERFECT against TN. 2 missed FG's against KY hurt like a bad boy. We hit those 2 FG's and Bama wins with ease. Just get that ball up, dude and we'll be ok. Diaz, good job keeping the ball between the lines the last couple of games. Good job. Against TN, we're gonna need that thing kicked outta the end zone though, so BOOM it! :) As for the Punter, Daniel Pope, this guy should get the Heisman Trophey. He's doin' everything he can to help out Bama get good field position for the D, but we ain't holdin'. We're gonna need his leg against TN if there's any shot of us winning...but so far, Great Job!

Coaching - play calling, putting the RIGHT players at every posistion...gotta improve and MD knows this. He's seen the RB situation and has done something about it. Good job there. Good job taking JDP out of goal-line situations too. He's still learning, so we need to take it easy on him. Remember, he's FEELING the probation this year. He's doin' his best...let's just hope he can make the right decisions against TN. As far as the rest of the coaches, something just feels "blah" on the field. There is NO intensity out on that field EXCEPT when they first run out on the field and the crowd is into it. If we get behind, we have a tendency to get down and thing the game is lost, even in the 2nd quarter. So far, the 2nd half adjustments this year have been good, we've just been giving the other team THE BIG PLAY to win it. It's like we control the other team till the VERY end, then give it away (see Arkansas & KY). We CAN'T do that and win games. Ya gotta play the WHOLE game. Boom-daddy, knowutimean? 'Nuff said.

Oh, hats off to the LSU Bayou Bengals for beatin' the Gaytors. I watched that game and was cheerin' for the Tigers like I was cheerin' for Bama.... I can't say how much I enjoyed that game. As for our game this weekend, we have to play mistake-free football and watch PM on the bootleg. On the goal line, don't be surprised to see PM fake the handoff and roll into the endzone untouched. He did it when he was a sophomore and I feel like he'll do it to us again this year....so watch that, BAMA. What else? Solid D (NO OFFSIDES CALLS!!), and a ball control offense will win this game for us. But the D HAS TO MAKE PLAYS or we will lose. If we have a chance at and int and don't get it, it WILL haunt us. It's time to step up the play... but deep down, I know Bama usually plays to the level of the competition, so hopefully we'll make a game of this. TN will score at least 21, so we've gotta find a way to score 30. This really reminds me of the '90 season where we were supposed to get CLOBBERED in Knoxville, but won 9-6 (I was there). If we win this game, that will be HUGE. Lemme tell ya, there ain't nothing better than beating a team that you aren't supposed to beat (see Arkansas & Kentucky). May the 3rd Saturday in October bring back those Bama victories! The Dawg has spoken...we'll see ya at the game! ROLL TIDE! I'll be in the student section.

S. MISS - Bama escapes 27-13, (3-1), (1-1)

Da biggest game of the season (so far) is now in the history books...well, actually Arkansas was pretty big NOW, huh? Last week put us in a small bind. But nothing we can't get out of though. It rained, we came, we saw the Tide win in not-so-unusual fashion yet again...nail-biting, gut-wrenching, wait-till-the-end-of-the-game-to-win win. Are we sure that ain't just "tradition" in the way we win games?? I'm thinking the Houston game was just a fluke, adn we realized that we weren't following past tradition. Now we're back to the old Tide. UGH! :)

Well, this week we still have a good bit to complain about, but at least we got a VERY needed W in the W/L column. Nothing is more important that that W. Like Gene Stallings always said..."I'd rather win ugly than lose pretty". How annoying, but yet how true those words are. It was definitely an UGLY win, but I think I speak for every Bamafan when I say "I'm just glad we won". S.Miss is a very good football team. Lots of high expectations were expected this year from the USM squad, especially how they played Florida so tough, or should I say, because Florida played so poorly. You have to admit though, that Florida was just getting greased up for the season. I think they are where they were at at the end of last year, if not stronger on D. If USM plays Florida next week, it's not even close...so enought hype about how USM is gonna give Bama a good game...THAT'S NOTHING NEW (except for '93 when we beat them 40something-0). Other than that it's always been a close game...and USM put up QUITE the fight, especially in the first half.

Since I didn't have to go outta town this past weekend, I headed for T-town from the Big D. I was a little sick, but nothing keeps me away from the Tide (well, almost nothing). Sooo, I drove out Friday and went to Birm. to sit under the upper deck in the student section (Thank you, Lord!) I was sick enough as it was...didn't need anymore rain on me. Because it was so slick and wet, I expected Bama's running game to come alive. It only sorta did. We managed to break the century mark, but barely. I think I'm rambling on too much...Anyway....Kudos to Diaz for not kicking it out of bounds on the kickoffs. Good improvement there...now if we can only learn how to tackle on special teams (ONE time we DID stop them deep...inside the 10 I think). In my opinion (IMO), I think John David Phillips needs to be utilized there. He played on special teams last year and did quite well. I didn't really check, but if he's not on special teams, and he's not QB'ing, he needs to be out there, cuz he's a smart special teams player. I think Pope should get the Heisman this year. He's got like a 41-45 yd average on a TON of punts. He's come up big for us this year, and could be our MVP for keeping us in good field position the whole game when we don't move the ball (which is a lot of the time, unfortunately). Excellent Job, Pope! Now, as far as tackling, we still suck there. I don't like to use that word (suck), but that really describes how our team tackles (special teams and a lot of times, defense too). FG's are still a plus so far this year. Brian Cunningham is doing a great job. He missed 1 FG, but at a hard angle, and on wet surface, even at 35 yds, it's not a given. But overall, he's done well. He can still get better though...and he will.

Where to go now...Offense or Defense?? Hmmm....We'll start with the lackluster side of the ball this week...Offense: Now, this is just my take, so remember that...it's just MY opinion. I didn't get to see the game on TV and have the convenience of instant slo-mo replay. So from a live view, here's how I see our O: Lucky. In the USM game, we WERE lucky. The 2 big plays on offense were luck and here's why (yes, luck DOES play a part in sports sometimes and these 2 situations apply):

1. The pass to Chad Goss just before the half expired - Luck or skill? It was luck mostly because from what I could see, the USM guy tried to swat the ball, but missed. Chad even had to wait on the ball to get there (not "in stride" pass). That gave the defender plenty of time to get there. Lucky for us, the guy missed it and the ball literally fell into Goss's arms. Not taking anything away from Goss either...he concentrated hard to keep the ball and not let the guy distract him, but it was still, IMO, a lucky break for us. But a very good job, Chad. We needed it...and you too, Freddie. Way to find the open man.

2. The pass to Shamari Buchanon...again, the guy practically tried to get defensive interference. He put his hands up and got a piece of the ball, and with LUCK, the ball floated up and fell into the hands of Buchanon. If the DB hadn't have tried to intercept the ball (just knock it down), we're back on the 40 or so. But again, good concentration and hands on the part of S.B. Nice play, Freddie. Found the long ball twice in one game...not bad.

I kinda expounded on that part of the game because that's kinda what kept the crowd alive...and believe me, it was pretty dog-gone dead thru 3 quarters with the exception of those long pass plays. (and the TD of course) As far as the rest of the offense....MORE RUTLEDGE, please! He is a Senior this year, and we are gonna waste his AWESOME talent. Use him more, or da Bamadog is gonna bite somebody! :) RB's...we ran the ball quite a bit, but I think that was because of the wet weather (somehow, other teams can pass in the rain, but we can't). I wonder if they ever practice with wet balls/gloves during practice. If not, I think that would be a GREAT idea...to see if how our plan of attack changes if it rains. Back to the RB's...they did "OK", but that's it. I was happy to see Shaun get more carries...but with the poor blocking of the OL, I'm surprised we got as many yards as we did. Of course, inexperience plays a part here (3 Fr. started). But that bunch will hopefully get better as the year goes along. It needs to be in top notch in 3 weeks from now. The TN defense won't be as kind as the USM defense (only 2 QB sacks). And from what I understand, OL'men like to run-block better than pass blocking anyway...so what's up? This is our biggest weakness I think. Our QB has experience, RB's, WR's...all have been there, but the OL hasn't. It's time for them to step it up, starting in the Kentucky game. WR's...did a good job, but we need to get more timing routes. That's how FL and KY are eating up teams. That 3-5 step then in/out--pass. The pass to S.B. from Freddie was a beauty. I was soooo pleased to see Freddie put some finesse on the ball. It actually looked nice from my seat. Nice play....but still wanna see more Rutledge. :) Oh, and hats off to Dustin McClintock. FR Fullback having a good year so far. He's getting the knod while Scissum is out and is doin' great. First TD pass of his Bama career...and he looks like a horse. Don't get in his way or he'll plow you over. He's not the fastest guy in the world, but he's strong...kinda like Kevin Turner. Good hands as well. Great job, Dustin....Now on to the D...

The Defense, well, played for 1.5 quarters...well, actually, no, I'm wrong there. They played the whole game...they just didn't SEEM to play till the end when we got some turnovers and played more aggressively. Maybe they got fired up at halftime...whatever it was, they need to have that intensity the WHOLE game. Just one question though...this hasn't been too much of a problem in the past, but has come up the past 2 weeks: How come our DB's (Bryant, Townsend, Sigler), don't get their hands up a lot more when the receiver goes for the ball? Maybe it's just me, but about 3-4 passes on 3rd down, all our guy has to do is put a hand up and the pass is incomplete. It's like we're on them like white on rice, but they still catch the ball because we're not really "defending" the pass. Somehow, the ball kept being thrown behind the receiver and the DB couldn't do anything...whatever the case, they need to get their eyes open and get those hands up. I will say that they make some pretty big plays, but so many times we get burned when we have an easy play to defend. Just an observation. STEVE HARRIS. Do I need to say more?? He's the man this year. He has really stepped it up big so far this season. Pickett has played great too, but Harris has really been a standout. Had 1 pick, coulda had 2. He's been the QB's worst nightmare so far (since Myers won't be able to prove himself as last year). Good job there, dude. He also got the defensive player of the game by TASN. Keep it up! OH! Almost forgot...I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO disappointed in our tackling. I was SOOOOO mad when Sigler had the guy IN THE BACKFIELD and had his arms ALL THE WAY AROUND the RB, and just let go, assuming since he grabbed him, he would just fall down. That was the MOST disappointing I was the whole game. He's about to get to the level of Feagin (and don't get me started there). I know these guys are young, but you MUST, I repeat, MUST learn to tackle and NEVER give up till the whistle is blown. I'm tired of shoulder tackles, and trying to swipe the legs, and pushing the guy....it's time to get down and dirty. This game is about blood and sweat (see NFL commercials)...you're gonna get cut, you're gonna get bruised up, but that's why you play the game...because you believe in it...and you live it. Don't ever think anyone is better...always think of them as the one you are gonna dominate. If we take that attitude into the game on D, and tackle like BAMA knows how to tackle, we're gonna be one heckuva defense. Too many times we have the offensive guy for a loss or a no-gainer, yet they spring loose and get 4, 5, or even more yards than that. Getting blocked is one thing, but to have a guy "tackled" and to let him go??? That's just inexcusable in my book. I know the guys are tired, but ya gotta still give 110%. Ok, I'm done with my halftime coaching speech. :)

DL, more penetration...nuff said. Stop the run and get to the QB, and we'll be alright. More big plays here would be good. Lastly, stay on your side of the ball (note: 5 off-sides calls). I noticed that 3 times (I think), the call was on Kenny Smith, the FR. Someone tell him to be intense, but to stay till the center hikes the ball. That one drive where they were just trying to draw us offsides (they were gonna punt if we didn't fall for it), they succeeded cuz we weren't thinking. The guys on the DL have to know the situation and what the offense is gonna try to do. Obviously with 4th and more than 1 yd, you could tell what they were up to...and we fell into the trap and shot ourselves in the foot...1st down USM. UGH! Gotta be smart and keep the number of penalties down. That almost killed us. DuBose said he didn't mind too much about the calls (on the SEC teleconference call)...that he wanted the guys to keep the intensity high. I agree, but I say keep the intensity high and BE MATURE football players. You've still gotta use that peon brain once in a while if you're gonna outsmart the other team. We need to improve there.

I guess I'm about outta air now...been venting quite a bit this week. I apologize for the late update this week, but I was sick the past couple of days. Don't worry...it WILL get updated if I'm in town...no doubt about that. Just keep on keepin' on... Up next Kentucky. Should be a good one. Couch is the next QB in the SEC possibly, and it's time to put him in his place (or he's gonna put us in our place). GO BAMA!!! Beat those CATS!!! ROLL TIDE!!!

ARKANSAS - Bama gets stunned 16-17, (2-1), (1-1)

Where do I freakin' start? This Bama team has gone from awesome to bottom (or so it seems) in 4 weeks. The Houston game looked great...the Vandy game was ok, but still got the shutout...and now another win for the Hogs in Bryant-Denny Stadium? Remember '95?? Same thing: a 1-point win by the Hogs. Now I'm kinda starting to know what LSU feels like when we go there to Death Valley. We CANNOT make this a tradition at Bama. Losses like this SHOULD not happen (see Miss. St. last year too). You've just gotta win the games you're supposed to win, and Bama should have won this game against an Arkansas team that has struggled in the season and is unranked. I guess it's one of those times when any given football team can beat another football team on any given day of the year, and this was Arkansas' day...again. :(

My main problem with this game was the call for the 2-pt. conversion...it was a GOOD call...BUT:

1) Again, I disagree with putting in the triple option (or whatever) with a COLD quarterback in the game. Tucker was doin' fine and had a rhythm goin', and then JDPhillips comes in and gets a delay of game penalty. We just can't be putting a cold QB in the game in those types of situations. As I stated in my last weeks take...it would come back an haunt us...and low and behold, the Bamadog made no mistake there.

2) Even though you get the penalty, that doesn't mean you go for 1 just because you're farther away from the goal line. The situation is STILL the same: You are down by 5, so you go for 2. Doesn't matter where you are...you go for 2. As little scoring as we did, It had to be safe to assume that if we got 1 extra point, it wouldn't make any difference. Even if you miss the 2-pt conversion, you're in the same boat...a TD beats you. That was the first really bad coaching call this year (of course, I say putting a cold QB in the game is pretty bad too though). I think the coaching staff will learn from this...

3) 3 times JD Phillips has had the ball on the goal line and 3 times he has failed. I don't know if we'll be seeing JD down on the goal line anymore this season. I think he has proved my point 3 times now.

Offense: It was practically non-existant. The running game was weak, the passing game was weak, blocking was weak, etc. We played like Arkansas played last week against SMU. This was NOT the Bama team that played the last 2 weeks. I don't know what to say about our QB play. I don't know if switching the QB's is as smart as all that anymore. Regardless of whether it is or not, the job is not getting done here. Freddie did have a good run though. I was proud of him on that particular play. Hidden in all the bad stuff we did have something good...no turnovers, but then again, neither did the Hogs. As for the running backs, all I've got to say is that Riddle (as much as he's done for us in the past) needs to sit down and let the others guys get the ball. Last week, 13-31...this week, 9-31 (or so). He's just not getting it done. Shaun and Curtis are by far, the best we have. I know the offensive line really struggled today, even with that, Alex and Alex STILL managed to get more yds/carry (from what I remember). Riddle still has this East-West philosophy instead of North-South. He did have one good run around the outside, but one play doesn't make up a game-full of bad runs. Something has to be done about the RB spot. We have too much talent there this year to waste it like that. WR's did well from what I could tell. We NEED to get Rutledge involved in the game a WHOLE LOT MORE in the future. Rutledge caught one pass...one. With this new offense, the TE is supposed to get a little more that one pass in a game. Maybe we've gone back to the Gene Stallings offense...who knows. Whatever the case, we've got to get him more involved if we're gonna still make noise in the SEC West. Unless we win the rest of our SEC games, the SEC West title looks grim. Arkansas WILL lose some more...so IMO, we still control our own destiny for the SECW title. Every game is MUST-WIN now. Anyway, back to the game...the offense line (by the way, I watched the game on TV) did a poor job in protection today. It was the OL of old. But from what the commentators were saying (don't know if many know this), 3 Freshmen started on the OL today (I think that's correct, maybe I heard wrong). It's gonna be hard to win games with that little experience on the OL. And if there were 3 FR, what happened to the vets? I coulda sworn we had more than that. I think they came in later in the game....but in any case, still a poor outing for the OL. Overall play of the offense: D+. We just couldn't get it goin'. One long pass to Quincy Jackson was the only thing on our highlight reel.

Defense: Tackle, Tackle, Tackle!!! I can't count the number of times we ran right by the Hogs' players, or either hit them, or slapped them with our arms, hoping they would fall down. I can't remember a game where Bama tackled SOOO poorly. Plenty of times we had them in the backfield or at least with a no-gainer, and we let them slip forward to gain 3-7 more yards or more. We have GOT to wrap up the ball carrier or we're gonna have MAJOR problems the rest of the year. And how easy is it for the ball carrier to juke and jive and make our players miss??? Our players seem to buy every fake thrown their way. I'm not just saying that cuz we lost the game. It's true. It was just very poor tackling on our defense's part...something I've not seen in a Bama defense in quite some time. We held them very well the whole game, but kept giving them hope...that's obvious as the score was only 17-16...but Geez Louise! Breakdown in the coverage at the end of a game where Bama usually dominates the 4th quarter...please don't leave a man wide open in the end zone anymore, PLEASE? That's not too smart, ya know... One player that really is not impressing me is #3 Michael Feagin. I think he's a SO. Whatever he is, he's got to play with more passion and intensity. He has a hard time tackling more than anyone, and has a knack for getting burnt (and not just this game either, but last year as well). But I guess probation is keeping us from having more/better players on the field, huh? I'd like to see more improvement in his play particularly. LB's...Pickett has really stepped up his play...granted, he's no Rudd/Staten, but he stood up that guy at the goal line 2 times before they finally stuck it in the endzone. Good Job Pickett....but we still came up short. DL needs to get more penitration AND SACKS! That's the key though...we get through the line a few times, but don't capitalize. Yeah, we did a few times, but enough. See N.C. defense and take notes. They are playing like Bama used to...but then again, they haven't been hit by probation and have a defense similar to the Bama '92 defense...so that would be hard to match. Our athletes just need to step it up. This is not Bama football. Defense : C (because you just don't give up the big play at the end of the game THAT easily)

The last phase, special teams, did OK with the exception of the blocked FG and a couple of missed tackles It's one thing to get a kick blocked up the middle, but to leave a guy totally unblocked to come around the side and block a kick with ease....that's unacceptable. Brian shoulda had the chance to get that ball thru the uprights...but instead, a missed assignment. Who knows if the FG woulda been good, but I'd like to take that chance when we come out on bottom by 1 pt at the end of the game. Punting - AWESOME. Pope's the man. He kicks a.. the ball, yeah, the ball. :) Diaz...good long kickoffs, but out of bounds don't help us much....just don't do that, and his game is perfect. Attacking the punt returner - when your kicker gives you a HIGH medium kick and the Bama guy has made it downfield and is 4 yds in front of the punt returner and you still can't tackle him, something is wrong. We had some decent punt coverages, but a couple of the guys on special teams don't understand that you don't have to dive after the punt returner...all he has to do is juke to the right or left and you're toast. Please make a note to either let the runner come to you (if you're not quick enough), or make the dadgum tackle. Special Teams get a C. Because they were just that: average.

Coaching: I think I've already mentioned about the bad call for the go-for-1 scenario. What else? Oh, just the decision to leave Riddle in the game too long. He's slow and runs E-W (for the most part). If he's not getting the job done, then someone else should be given the chance. Play-calling was rather predictable at times, but still needs to get better with WHO to throw the ball to...again, Rod Rutledge comes up. Need more play-calling for the TE. He should touch the ball at least 5 times a game. He's just too valueable to waste.

Overall Grade for the Tide - C - because we just didn't look any better. Bama was not out on that field...it's time to get our crap straight...and NOW. Sorry if I seem upset, but I'm just not accustomed to seeing the Tide play so poorly and lose like we did today.

I just checked out the stats and see that Riddle's stats are 2nd best to C.Alexander...well, the running game today just stunk up the field. 106 total yds by our RB's. Gotta improve that... That's all. Beat S.Miss!!!

VANDY - Bama wins and gets the shutout 20-0, (2-0), (1-0)

The 2nd game for the Crimson Tide has finally come to an end, and is undefeated in conference play...ok, so it's one game of conference, play, but it's better than getting beat in our only conference game, alright? :) Anyway, Vandy played us tough from what I saw (I watched the game on TV this week), but mainly our problem was with RB...not with the RB position itself, but with Dennis Riddle. 13 carries, for 31 yards??? You've gotta be kiddin' me! I think if Riddle were to run over a Q-tip on the field, he'd trip and fall down. How many times is he gonna get tacked in the backfield...and how many times is he gonna run East-West before being pulled down for a loss?? That was my MAIN problem with the Vandy game. I was SOOO frustrated with the play of Dennis Riddle. I don't care if he's the #1 guy or not...if he can't get yards and the other guys can, well, something's wrong, my friend.Curtis and Shaun really impress me with their natural raw talent on running the ball, especially Shaun...he even pulled a Hudini at the goal line and scored after playing basketball Russian roulette with the football...but he kept pushing till he crossed the goal line. He's really impressed me more than anyone so far. But Curtis is not far behind. He has great moves/speed as well. And Riddle, he just needs to be the fullback or something, cuz about all he can do is block. Last year at this time, Curtis was the starter. I wouldn't be surprised to see Curtis start the Arkansas game. Even if he doesn't, I have a feeling that if Riddle doesn't get his act in gear he won't be playing much more, much less starting the game. Scissum is awesome as usual. What great hands that guy has. And a TD, BABY!! Roll Tide!! Maybe it will just take Riddle a couple more games to get into a rhythm...I don't know. I just want to see improvement in his play, bigtime. E-W running can't happen every game or we'll be doomed. Also, he seemed slow, except in the 4th quarter...he needs to dish out that much energy quarters 1-3 as well...that's all I have to say about that...Just get better, dude.

What else?...Freddie did ok except for the 2 interceptions. One interception in my eyes was ok...mainly cuz Dennis Riddle used his helmet instead of his hands to catch the ball...and the other one he threw down on the 4 yard line...we were about to punt anyway, so that interception was just as good (if not better than) as a punt, only a TD woulda been better. :) Tucker is still impressing me every game. Freddie better watch out or Tucker's gonna be startin' soon. He can pass, and he can scramble...watch out behind you Freddie! :)

The rest of the offense did well. The WR's did well in getting open and didn't have many dropped passes. Quincy Jackson (#7) had the best game catching a 40 yd bomb to get the Tide into scoring position. So far he's done well in replacing Michael Vaughn. What can you finally say about the offensive line? They are finally playing very well. They have only allowed 2 sacks on the season, both coming in the Vandy game. If they keep this up, Bama may have a good chance to throw the ball finally...giving Kitchens/Tucker enough time to find the open receivers. This part of our game is looking good.

The Bama Defense was stunning. 124 yds of offense was given up on the day, and that's without the help of All-American Defensive End, Michael Myers. His status should be determined hopefully by mid-week for the Arkansas game. 2 Linebackers finally stood out and worked hard...Pickett and Harris. There were some MEAN, and I mean MEAN blows to the receivers and QB in the game. They were hitting hard and letting their presence be known. That's the Bama D that I know. And not only did we hold Vandy to 124 yards, we also posted our first shutout of the season under Mike DuBose. I'm sure he was more than impressed with the defense. Of course, there is always room for improvement. Still, a few times, we didn't wrap up the guy in the backfield and he got a few more yards. That's gotta improve for one thing. Also, gotta cause turnovers. While tackling these guys, we've gotta try to strip the ball and intercept the opposition. ie. See N.Carolina's D. Our Defense is good, but something small is still not there...that little extra that makes a good defense great.

The kicking game was AWESOME FINALLY. Brian Cunningham, subbing in for the injured Plugner, did a great job hitting a 46 and a 48 yard field goal. I think it was a smart move on the part of coach DuBose at the end of the game and get another field goal...not for the sake of running up the score (a mere 3 points is not running up the score), but to give Brian more game experience in kicking the long ball. We might have a game later on that depends on a long FG. Smart move on the coaches part. I was hoping he'd kick the FG myself. XP's were all made this week (thank you!)...and the punting game (which was what the game was all about Thursday night) was good as well. Pope did a great job in getting the ball up and in the right place on the field. He averaged about 47 yds/punt. Great job! Kickoff return and punt returns were 100% better than the Houston game. We finally covered the kickoff returner! :) And what can you say about Warren Foust, who blocked a punt to set the Tide up for it's first score of the game. The O was struggling, so that was just what we needed to charge the offense (even though it was only charged that one time in the 1st half). 7-0 at the half is anything but great to be proud of, but our guys played hard and got the W. (2-0) ain't a bad start for the new coach...but the real test is coming around the bend come the 3rd weekend of October (YES, back on the 3rd weekend, and in B'ham!). That's gonna be his first tough test.

One other thing I noticed that I'm not too comfortable with is the 3rd QB coming in the game (J.D. Phillips). He's a great player, but when you drive the length of the field and then put him in at the goal line COLD off the sideline, that's not too smart if you ask me. In my opinion, Tucker has the same mobility of a JDP and has played a good number of snaps. It's good to get JDP in the game, but after that long of a drive, that could be costly if he's cold. You really shouldn't break the rhythm like that I don't think. Tucker and Kitchens will be gone next year and Phillips will be the man, but IMO, he should really come in the game when the game is put away or close to it. If we were to pull something like that at the Tennesse game, I would feel MOST uncomfortable putting a cold QB in the game at the goal line. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I see it...

That's all for this week's take on the game. Next is Arkansas who is coming off a loss to SMU. Looks like another down year for the Hogs...Should take care of business at home next week. ROLL TIDE!!!

HOUSTON - Bama wins 42-17, (1-0), (0-0)

Well, the 1997 Bama football season has started and Coach Mike DuBose got exactly what he wanted...a win to start out his head coaching career here at Bama. Something that the Bear and Stallings didn't even do...with their first game. And DuBose didn't just win the first game, he won convincingly. Even ESPN analyst Lee Corso mentioned that there was more than 1 highlight in the season opener. More offense this year will be expected.

Anyway, I got to attend the Houston game, and lemme tell ya...for a non-conference game (obviously people were mainly there to see the coaching debut of DuBose) it was practically a sellout crowd. I looked all over Legion Field and man, looked like every seat was taken from my standpoint. I was VERY impressed with the crowd attendance.

As for the game, here's the Dawg's take...

It was HOT, man!! :) Hot and humid, but a great day for football (any day is a great day for Bama football)...The opening kickoff was made and special teams did ok. Everyone's pumped at this point. We stop the Cougers 3 times with 3-and-out drives. That was impressive, but even more impressive, we also scored on our first 3 offensive drives and also intercepted a pass for a TD. When does Bama start out THAT good??? Well, it happened on Saturday, and I think I speak for all Bamafans when I say we were very happy to see that. It was a great game, but sometimes I wonder about the defensive intensity we lacked (as DuBose also mentioned). It was very obvious that the D wasn't as tenacious as it usually is. That will be fixed by Vandy time next week. On to the positions...

QB (A) - You HAVE to be impressed with Freddie Kitchens and Lance Tucker. The only reason the QB doesn't get an A+ is because of the fumble by JD Phillips just before falling into the end zone. That's something JD will surely be more careful of in the future. But anyway, the opening half of football was just unbelievable. We drove down the field running and passing like a REAL team. And Freddie and Lance engineered those drives to perfection. 3rd down conversions were also at a high percentage (compared to last year). What impressed me was Freddie throwing the ball away if the receiver wasn't open (I was cheering Freddie at that point), and then the play where Lance did a spin move to avoid the hard rush, then dump it off to C.Alexander for the TD. You couldn't have asked for much more of our QB's that day. They looked really sharp. If Buchannon hadn't slipped on his passing route, Freddie wouldn't have thrown his lone interception. That really wasn't his fault. Overall, good job. I look forward to this position being this good or better in coming games.

RB (A+) - What can you say about one of THE premiere backfields in the country. They don't disappoint, folks. Even with the absence of Dennis Riddle, there is NO dropoff whatsoever. Can you say "depth"? :) Curtis showed why he was last year's starter...and could very well become the starter by mid-season if he keeps up the job he's doing and DOESN'T GET HURT! If he stays well, Bama is ready for the running attack. Shaun is the other force to deal with. He'll always be in the mind of Bama fans for his 20 rushes for 291 yds against LSU in '96. From the looks of the Houston game, he's gonna break the long runs all season long. From what I see, he's just got that natural raw running back talent that it takes to make it to the next level. He's got the speed for sure, but needs to hang on to the ball just a little better. But normally, a very good guy to have the ball when you need to run the ball. Madden didn't play due to injury. Scissum played the FB spot...what can you say? Scissum is SO impressive. Good hands and awsome balance and determination when running the ball. He'll be a definite plus in our offense this year.

WR (A) - This position would get an A+ if Buchannon doesn't slip and cause an interception. That was pretty costly in a bigger game. Even with the absence of Michael Vaughn, the receivers really stepped it up. Goss had 2 big catches for 50 yds, and Buchannon and Hall made some snazzy grabs as well. Quincy Jackson, the new JUCO player #7 (replacing the old Kevin Jackson last year #7), played a good game as well. I've heard that he has speed and good hands, but unfortunately, he was only able to catch one pass on the afternoon for 9 yds or so. Hopefully, he will maintain a high level of play during the season.

TE (A+) - WHAT A CATCH!! Rutlegde just keeps on impressing me, even in the past when he didn't catch many passes. He's a great blocker as well. But what can you say about his great hands? The one handed grab from Freddie was definitely one to see on the highlight reel later in the year. We keep him healthy and we'll be ok here. We lose him, and there's quite a dropoff to the next guy. Great Job Saturday, Rod!

OL (A+) - The offensive line finally had a GREAT game. Freshman center Hogan played extremely well. There were no fumbles on the center/QB snap, and better than anything was the fact that NO Bama QB was sacked during the game. That hasn't happened in a LOOOONG time. They get the A+ for that main stat. Also, they made some awesome holes for our RB's to get thru. If they can maintain this type of play in the big games this year, we'll be headed for the Orange Bowl. Great job!

DL (A) - We had great defensive pressure on the QB's but need to lock up on tackles a little better. We have them in the backfield then let them go for a few more yards cuz we don't take them down immediately. Overall, a good game...let's just hope the suspension to Myers doesn't run into the heart of our schedule. We need him on the line if our DL is gonna be great.

LB (C+) - C is just that...average. They didn't play great, but they didn't play very bad either...they were just average. Again, we've got to lock up the RB's when we blitz. We make to many arm tackles and don't take them down in the backfield enough. We DID have some good plays, but it needs to be much more consistent. DuBose will make some changes here to make this group a little better when we face Vandy. Just a lack of intensity at this position for sure. Not as mean as last year. NEVER give up on a play! That's what I liked about Staten. He never gave up till the whistle was blown. I know there's a major dropoff from last year, but it still needs to improve. We'll see what happens in the next game to give a better observation.

DB/Safety (A-) - Our CB's generally dominate the game, but were burnt a couple of times. Of course most of those came at the expense of the 2nd/3rd teamers...the 99 yd drive in 3 plays was uncalled for. Regardless of what team you play for, you just can't give that type of yardage up. Sigler, who gave up the TD pass shouldn't have let the guy even get behind him like that. Something I'm sure the defensive coaches will improve upon. Bryant...awesome pick for a TD. Being one of the fasted guys on the whole team, no one was gonna catch him. Great job. Townsend played a great game as well. They didn't throw it to his side much, but he finally made some good tackles, and not as much "bump tackles". He will be tested later on in the season when we face Tennessee. Safeties played well, but still seem to lack intensity and speed. That could hurt us later in the season when a RB gets loose...we need to make sure tackles. Overall, good job in this area.

Special Teams (D+) - Two 40 yd returns after kickoff, and missed extra point. That's not good. Special teams don't really play as much, but when you make 3 mistakes, that's a high percentage to be messing up...thus the D grade. Plugner did a great job though. He got the ball up (except for that one XP missed) very well. He looks to be a good guy to have this year. Good job...just don't be missing XP's like that. It could cost us bigtime. As for the kickoff coverage team, changes/plans will change this area. Got to cover kickoffs better than that. No excuses. DuBose will correct this before the Vandy game. And let's hope that we don't allow them a fake punt up the middle this year, guys! :) The punting game and other aspects of special teams were ok. Pope did a good job punting the ball...ALL 2 times. :) But that's a good sign. Means the offense is doing something right when your punter doesn't have to work much. Roll Tide!

Coaching (A) - Playcalling was excellent. DuBose has the right idea...let the assistent coaches do what they do best. Make the 4th down calls and stuff like that. So far so good...good offensive minds are on our side now, and since we have the weapons, we can execute those plans. OL coach deserves a BIG hand. They did great...Special teams coach...well, they did ok, but will need to make the necessary adjustments for next week's game. I feel good about this year...looks very good.
